Expecting the Unexpected: Proactive Move-Related Problem Solving

Whether you've moved once before or a dozen times, each move can play out very differently from the last and lead to problems you've perhaps never before experienced. Use this guide to thoroughly assess your next move and root out problems before they arise. By expecting the unexpected, you can proactively ensure that your move carries on seamlessly.

Costs, Costs and More Costs

While your moving company will do its best to give accurate quotes, costs can often increase as the work involved with your relocation moves forward. Here are just a few areas where move costs can increase:

  • Fragile belongings: adequately caring for belongings that are easily breakable can lead to increased costs.
  • Storage here, storage there: your belongings may need to be warehoused either near their initial location or at your final destination, based on timing issues that may be out of your control. Some of these timing issues may result from housing not being ready, international customs-related issues, or needing to vacate your house earlier than expected. Calculate storage-related costs for the worst case scenario – then you'll be pleasantly pleased to save money.
  • Tariffs and fees: International moves may involve tariffs and taxes based upon what you are moving, or how much you are moving. Additionally, if your belongings will travel through additional countries on the way from Point A to Point B, more fees may be incurred. Like storage costs, it's better to ruthlessly add worst-case-scenario fees to your move budget and then rejoice when things come in under budget.

The Importance of Insurance

Your movers will work diligently to get your belongings transferred capably and carefully. However, lost or damaged items are a painful reality that can strike unexpectedly. Protect yourself by insuring your move appropriately.

Umbrella move insurance may not adequately cover your possessions. Instead, it's best to inventory your belongings and their value so you can obtain comprehensive coverage. This means that whether your mover or outside forces are responsible for loss or damage, you will be adequately compensated.

Realistically, and statistically, most or all of your belongings will arrive unscathed. But by investing in move insurance, you can anticipate the unexpected and feel better about how your move will play out.

Cultural Calamities

You may be moving somewhere that boasts a far different lifestyle – with far different expectations – than you are used to. Arriving at your destination and being confronted by awkward, uncomfortable or unexpected realities can dampen your entire move. Instead, take time to study the culture you will be joining, so you can prepare ahead as best you can.

Does your destination culture include gender- or age-related expectations? Although you may not agree or be comfortable with these expectations, you can work to mitigate their impact on your relocation. Is tipping or paying fees a recognized part of moving to certain areas? Do local customs or regulations mean that you can only move in on certain days or at certain times? Are certain items prohibited locally, meaning that you'll have to leave them behind?

Research your destinations as thoroughly as possible, so you can anticipate these often unexpected occurrences. Your diligence in planning ahead will leave you feeling better prepared and more confident in your move.
