4 Essential Things Expats Should Do While Living Abroad

Posted by Melissa Morr on Dec 12, 2016 11:01:00 AM

Moving abroad can be both exciting and challenging, but knowing what to do while you're abroad can make your experience as fulfilling as possible. Whether you're serving in the military, planning to retire or simply taking a year off, you'll want to take advantage of any opportunity you can while living abroad. Here are some things you should do to ensure a fulfilling and immersive experience abroad.

Learn a New Language

There's never a better time to start learning a new language than the present, and living in a foreign country is the quickest way to learn. While it may seem difficult to perform simple tasks such as asking for directions or ordering a meal, picking up a new language is surprisingly easy when you're forced to speak it every day. The first step towards a comfortable transition is communication, which is virtually impossible without learning the language.

Try New Food

Living the life of an expat often means changing your diet. But giving up some of the things you've grown used to eating also opens you up to a world of new cuisine. Being open-minded is the best way to discover new interests, and food is a great place to start. You may have an idea of the kinds of food you'll be eating before you leave, but nothing compares to the experience of having a traditional meal at the source.

Take a Class

Whether you're relocating for work or planning your retirement, living abroad is about learning through new experiences. Sometimes taking a class is the best way to learn about the people around you, their culture and the history behind your new home. Not only can you find fulfillment in broadening your knowledge, but you can also use the things you learn to have more fruitful interactions with the place in which you're living. For example, if you're in Brazil, you can take a class on samba and then use your new skill to partake in the nightlife of dance clubs.

Meet the Locals

Making friends is easy when you're abroad, because the people around you are likely as interested in your culture as you are in theirs. Meeting locals is a great way to find comfort abroad and discover the best things to do in the area. Building lasting relationships with locals is also a good way to stay connected to your home away from home after you've left.

Leaving the familiarity of home can be difficult, but living abroad can be a rewarding experience if you do it right. Knowing how to spend your time is the best way to get

the most out of your time abroad. Not only can you enjoy the experience of discovery and exhilaration, but you can also join the expat community without the stress of culture shock and homesickness.
